Whether it was on a permanent transfer, loan deal or expiring contract, around 20 players exited St James’s Park ahead of Steve Bruce’s second season in charge.
The likes of Danny Rose, Valentino Lazaro and Nabil Bentaleb returned to their parent clubs, while some of United’s upcoming talent secured loan moves in the Football League.
Here, we take a look at those who departed Tyneside – and how they are faring at their new clubs.

. Danny Rose
The England full-back has barely kicked a ball in anger since his temporary spell ended at Newcastle. Jose Mourinho wanted nothing to do with Rose, who has played two reserve matches this season after failing to land a loan move elsewhere. Photo: Alex Livesey
. Lewis Cass
Cass has been a regular for Dave Challinor's Hartlepool as they seek promotion from the National League. The 21-year-old started out as a right-back at Victoria Park but has since moved into the back three as a right-sided central defender, where he’s looked more than comfortable. . Jamie Sterry
Via Northern League Premier Division side South Shields, the 25-year-old joined Cass at Hartlepool, where he has quickly become a fans favourite. His contract expires at the end of the season and EFL clubs are sniffing about. Photo: Ian MacNicol
. Dan Barlaser
Rotherham United re-signed the midfielder following a successful loan spell. He has featured 33 times in the Championship this season - scoring three and assisting four as the Millers’ battle for survival went to the final day. Photo: Alex Livesey
. Victor Fernandez
Fernandez, 23, was poised to be the next big thing at Newcastle but early injuries ruined his progress. He’s now back in Spain playing for UE Cornella, who are in the third-tier of Spanish football. Photo: Charlotte Tattersall
. Liam Gibson
The 24-year-old left-back was snapped up by Morecambe following his release from Newcastle and has played 24 matches this term as Derek Adams’ side chased automatic promotion from League Two. Photo: Lewis Storey
. Jake Turner
Young goalkeeper Turner joined Gibson at the Globe Arena and despite playing a notable 14 matches in League Two, the 22-year-old was recalled by United in January. Photo: Charlotte Tattersall
