Bruno Guimaraes reacts to Newcastle United injury surgery blow with three-word message

Newcastle United injuries: Fabian Schar has issued an update on his ankle injury following surgery this week.

Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar is facing an extended spell on the sidelines following a serious ankle injury that has required surgery.

Schar was stretchered off during Newcastle’s 4-3 win over Leeds United at St James’ Park earlier this month.

Speaking last week, Magpies head coach Eddie Howe said: “He's got an injury there, but no break,”

“He's seeing a specialist in the next few days to get some definitive answers, but [it's] maybe more positive than the initial assessment.”

Schar’s injury has put more pressure on Newcastle’s already depleted back line. Full-back Tino Livramento then picked up a hamstring injury in the FA Cup win over Bournemouth to leave Howe with even fewer options at the back.

Livramento is facing up to eight weeks out with his injury, making him unavailable for a busy run of fixtures across all four competitions.

Schar is also likely to miss that run following surgery on his ankle on Thursday.

Fabian Schar issues Newcastle United injury update

Schar took to Instagram on Thursday to post an image of himself in a hospital bed with his left ankle heavily bandaged. The Swiss centre-back was sat up smiling with his thumb up as he issued a positive update.

“Thank you for all the well wishes over the past few weeks,” he wrote. “It means a lot! The prognosis is better than first feared…and most importantly, the surgery went well in London today!

“I’ll be supporting the boys from the stands in the meantime and can’t wait to get back out there 🖤🤍.”

Schar later shared the post to his Instagram story with the message: “I’ll be back.”

The post was met with many messages of support from teammates past and present. Chris Wood, Paul Dummett and Salomon Rondon were among Schar’s former teammates to respond while the likes of Jacob Murphy, Tino Livramento, Lewis Hall, Nick Woltemade, Aaron Ramsdale and Emil Krafth also wished Schar well.

Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes, who previously suffered with his ankle, wrote: “Get well brother 🖤🤍.”

NUFC defence injury update

Newcastle’s defensive situation is far from ideal but has shown signs of easing. Sven Botman and Kieran Trippier are back in contention while Dan Burn is on schedule to return before the end of the month.

Burn suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung during the defeat at Sunderland a month ago. But head coach Howe suggested that the 33-year-old will be back involved within ‘a couple of weeks’.

On Tuesday night, Burn himself issued an update on Sky Sports.

“I’m good,” he said. “Lungs are alright and my ribs will be a couple more weeks but feeling a lot better than I was four weeks ago.

“I think it’s the most pain I have ever been in. I was lying in bed for about three days, but it got better pretty quickly.”
