An extra-time goal from Allan Saint-Maximin gave Bruce’s side a 3-2 win in last night’s fourth-round replay at the Kassam Stadium.

Newcastle had surrendered a two-goal lead late in the tie, which was watched by owner Mike Ashley. The club will face West Bromwich Albion in the fifth round.

“I thought we deserved it,” said head coach Bruce. “I know it turned into a hairy cup tie in the last 10 minutes (of normal time), and was great for the neutral, although bloody awful for myself.

“If you’re a Newcastle fan, I’m sure parts of it weren’t great because you’d be thinking ‘aye, aye’. But it wouldn’t be Newcastle without a story, and if that’s the story, then let’s go to West Brom in the fifth round, and enjoy the challenge and take them on.”

Sean Longstaff celebrates his goal.
