The defender had a loan at Newcastle United cut short by injury last season. Now fully fit, Willems is available for transfer at Eintracht Frankfurt – and waiting for an opportunity.

Newcastle, the Gazette understands, have explored a move for Willems in this month’s window – and the 26-year-old is keen to return to St James’s Park.

Speaking about his time at United last year, Willems said: “I had a great time. I was feeling great, and you could see that on the pitch. The support they gave me, and confidence had in me, and people at the club, the coach (Steve Bruce) ... I had a great time. It was sad that it ended like that.”

Relegation-threatened Newcastle, hit by the coronavirus pandemic, are looking at the loan market in the window, and Willems could be loaned out in the final six months of his contract at the Bundesliga club.

However, at least two other Premier League clubs are also interested in the left-back, who impressed last season before rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in a home game against Chelsea.

Willems – who scored United’s goal of the season in 2019/20 – was a popular figure during his short time at St James's Park, and a move for him would be welcomed by fans.

Meanwhile, head coach Steve Bruce has a concern over left-back Paul Dummett, who missed most of last year with hamstring problems and was forced off against Sheffield United last week.
