Leeds United star 'lucky' not to see red in win against Newcastle United - says former Premier League referee

Newcastle United fell to their first defeat under head coach Matthias Jaissle on a disappointing night at Leeds United.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin was ‘lucky’ not to receive a red card during Leeds United’s 4-1 win against Newcastle United on Monday night - according to one former Premier League referee.

The 12-times capped England international was in impressive form as Daniel Farke’s side inflicted a first defeat of the season on the Magpies and moved into the top three of the Premier League table. The Whites took the lead just after teh half-hour mark with a deflected effort from Japan international Ao Tanaka that has now been awarded as a Lewis Miley own goal before Calvert-Lewin provided an assist for Jayden Bogle to double their advantage just two minutes later.

Former Everton star Calvert-Lewin was shown a yellow card for a challenge on Magpies defender Sven Botman just before half-time as he caught the Dutch centre-back with an elbow. Salt was rubbed into Newcastle wounds when the striker added a third goal just before the break before Noah Okafor, who featured under Magpies head coach Matthias Jaissle during his time at RB Salzburg, rounded off a dismal night for the German’s side when he grabbed a fourth goal on the hour-mark.

A late goal from substitute Bazoumana Traore was a mere consolation for Newcastle as they now turn their focus towards Saturday’s final Premier League fixture before the international break as newly-promoted Hull City visit St James’ Park.

Although it seems unlikely the decision to only show a yellow card to Calvert-Lewin for his coming together with Botman would have impacted on the result given Newcastle’s lacklustre display at Elland Road, former referee Keith Hackett believes the powerful striker can count himself fortunate he was not handed a more stern punishment by on-field referee Michael Salisbury, describing the call as ‘borderline’.

The former Premier League and FIFA referee told Football Insider: "This was no accident, and he is lucky not to receive a red card for this challenge. The referee judged it as 'reckless' and not 'violent conduct'. It was borderline and the player got the benefit of the doubt."
