Matthias Jaissle responds to 'disgusted' Newcastle United supporter claim after 3-1 defeat at Everton
Matthias Jaissle has delivered a message to disappointed Newcastle United supporters following Thursday’s Carabao Cup exit at Everton.
Matthias Jaissle has responded to ‘disgusted’ Newcastle United supporters following Thursday’s 3-1 defeat at Everton.
Just under 8,000 supporters travelled to the Hill Dickinson Stadium for the Carabao Cup last-16 clash as Newcastle found themselves 3-0 down heading into the closing stages before Dan Burn’s late consolation.
But by full-time, only a fraction of the away supporters remained in the ground to applaud the Newcastle side. There were even some boos that could be heard from the away end following the cup exit.

Dan Burn & Matthias Jaissle on supporter reaction
“I can understand frustrations completely, to an extent,” Newcastle captain Dan Burn said after the match. “We know it was a huge opportunity for us to progress, and this was our best chance to win [silverware]. It’s amazing that 8,000 fans get here to support us, but we’ve got to put that right on Monday.”
The Magpies will now be looking for a reaction against Everton on Monday night in the Premier League at St James’ Park.
When asked about the support at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Thursday, Newcastle head coach Jaissle was told some supporters were potentially ‘disgusted’ by aspects of his side’s performance as they fell to a third away defeat in four, conceding 11 goals in the process.
In response to the fan reaction, Jaissle said: “Well, I think they were not happy with the result, and with the three occasions we defended when their position was scoring.
“Overall, I think they saw a team fighting, a team who create many, many occasions to score. So, I think also they saw the bigger picture.
“But, of course, they travel here, we wanted to give them a nice evening with a great result, that we come around further in that competition, and that was not succeeding. So, of course, we can understand also their frustration.”
Improvements needed
When asked if his side were too soft and easy to play against, Jaissle responded: “It's something you need to adjust. For me it's about being mature in that situation, being more clinical, solve the situation, not allowing them to give almost a gift for the opposition to score.
“It feels like the opposition is not giving us these gifts at the moment, and therefore we need to avoid it.
“When it comes to scoring goals, we need to be more efficient out of so many occasions today. How often we enter the box of Everton, there needs to be more than only one goal.”
