Matthias Jaissle lets slip talks with Newcastle United 'decision-makers' after squad sit-down

Matthias Jaissle has spoken to his players and Newcastle United’s decision-makers about his style of play.

Matthias Jaissle insists Newcastle United’s players are fully behind his tactical approach despite growing scrutiny following successive Premier League defeats.

The German’s ‘vertical football’ philosophy has come under the spotlight after defeats to Coventry City and Aston Villa last week.

Jaissle succeeded Eddie Howe in the summer after his predecessor stepped down just 23 days before the season opener against Liverpool. The 38-year-old went unbeaten in his first three league matches, but has since suffered three defeats in his last four, raising questions over his system.

Matthias Jaissle holds talks with Newcastle United players

With Newcastle preparing for Sunday’s trip to Crystal Palace, Jaissle has discussed his approach with the squad and says his players are fully on board.

“That’s the good part, that they aligned with us in the coaching team,” Jaissle revealed.

“I mentioned it before, we’re sitting all in the same boat, we’re transparent, that’s my leadership style, not only talking, I think leadership is also me listening, and out of the door, if we go there together as a team, or stepping on the pitch, we need to be committed and we need to be aligned, going in the same direction, and that’s the case, so that’s something I’m proud of.

“To see that, to see that commitment, to see that hard-working ethic during the training sessions and during the week, these are all elements which leads hopefully to success.”

Jaissle has also held discussions with the club’s ‘decision-makers’ this week, explaining that his philosophy will take time to implement fully.

“We have for sure a lot of potential still,” said Jaissle. “I don't want to name now a percentage, but there's still quite a good gap to be filled.

“It's still part, and this is something I just mentioned a couple of days ago, within the club to some decision-makers, that sometimes we still feel in the pre-season, when we train with the group, and now finally with almost every player on the pitch, that was not possible in the past weeks.

“So we're still implementing basics for our way of playing, so it takes time, this is a progress. I think the good part is that everyone within the club is realistic and sees that.”

Jaissle added: “It was a week where we were fully committed in the things we want to develop. I think we mentioned also our potential, we managed the things where we can do better clearly in the post-match analysis, and from there we took then the steps to work on these things, and now it's of course time to just focus on the next match.

“In Crystal Palace we want to show another face, another performance, to be able then to get a great result, and that means three points.”
