'Not normal' - Matthias Jaissle blown away by what Newcastle United star did v Hull City

Sean Steur received special praise from Matthias Jaissle for his performance in Newcastle United’s 2-1 win over Hull City.

Matthias Jaissle waxed lyrical about Sean Steur’s performance in Newcastle United’s 2-1 win over Hull City.

The Magpies - and Steur - bounced back from the 4-1 defeat at Leeds United on Monday night to claim an important Premier League victory heading into the three-week international break.

Steur was back in the starting line-up in the Premier League for the first time since the opening day draw against Liverpool, with Nico Gonzalez, Jacob Ramsey and Joelinton all unavailable through injury.

The 18-year-old midfielder played the majority of the game at Leeds after Gonzalez was forced off in the 19th minute with a head injury, but had a tough evening after he misplaced his pass in the build-up to the hosts’ second goal.

Matthias Jaissle hails ‘exceptional’ Sean Steur

Steur issued a public apology after the game before responding by stepping up in the win against Leeds. What the Dutchman delivered was “not normal in football for a young lad”, according to Jaissle.

“He was exceptional, like the other players as well,” said Jaissle. “It was a performance you would wish from a really experienced, mature, old player, but he's so young. Showing that after a match where he was not at his highest level, where he already got a lot of criticism...

“We are emotionally stable, we give him all, and the other lads as well, all the confidence, the support, and then he's showing up like this. It's really special, not normal in football for a young lad, so I'm really pleased.

“On the other hand, it also shows that we have a young squad, and they need to adapt to the physicality of that league, that you can perform like this over 90 minutes plus additional time. So that will also be the next step for the upcoming months.”

Goals from Joe Willock and Lewis Hall put the Magpies 2-0 inside the opening seven minutes before Yoane Wissa missed a penalty to make it 3-0 in first-half stoppage time.

Steur withdrew with cramp in the 66th minute and less than a minute later, Hull pulled a goal back through Mohamed-Ali Cho.

Jaissle added: “Sean Steur was also dominating the game in possession. He gave us the calmness, the security, and that was maybe a reason why it looked different. But tactical-wise, we didn't change anything.”
