The results are in - Newcastle United supporters divided on Matthias Jaissle’s future

The Gazette has gauged the mood of the Newcastle United fan base following the 1-0 defeat to Everton.

Newcastle United fans are divided on Matthias Jaissle’s future just nine games into the Premier League season.

For the second consecutive home game, a limp Magpies outfit lost 1-0 - triggering a chorus of boos inside St James’ Park. Everton - just as they did in the Carabao Cup four days earlier - compiled more misery on Jaissle early into his Tyneside reign.

With Fulham (a), Arsenal (h), Brighton (a), Manchester United (h) and Sunderland (h) to follow, a tricky fixture list already has a section of supporters fearing the drop. And when results turn, the manager is usually the one in the firing line.

Newcastle are struggling to adjust to Jaissle’s “vertical football” approach. In his post-match press conference, the German suggested the players did not follow the pre-match game plan.

"We could not bring him (Will Osula) into situations. We need to jump the first lines with clear balance on how we want to play football. Just playing long balls is for sure not the sign he prefers.

"And it was not the plan. That is something you clearly need to mention. This is now the next step to clearly analyse it in-depth, and ask why we could not start the game as we originally planned."

The Gazette has gauged fan opinion across Facebook, YouTube and WhatsApp to assess where the fan base sits on Jaissle. It felt early given he arrived just three months ago - but the results show a clear division among supporters.

Of the 577 who responded, just over 50.09 per cent expressed support for Jaissle. Alarmingly, 46.8 per cent believe Newcastle chiefs should pull the trigger. The remaining 3.1 per cent are unsure.

One Facebook reader, Adam Capel, who is backing the manager, wrote: “(I am) 100 per cent in support of Jaissle. It's incredible to me that here it is November, with two-thirds of the season still to play, and people are calling for Matthias to be sacked.

“I've been a Toon fan for 33 years now and, though I love the fans’ passion for the club, that passion spills over to entitlement with unrealistic expectations for the manager i.e. Eddie Howe and now Matthias Jaissle. Let's step back, take a breath and check with reality folks.”

Another reply from a supporter, Tony Club, directly referenced Jaissle’s post-match comments as a warning that the cracks are already starting to show. He posted: “It doesn't matter what anyone on here thinks, his statement last night indicates players aren't following the game plan or instruction.

“(You) can't get rid of those players so, without a massive change, he has to go. Unfortunate? Who knows? But (it is) certainly looking like an unworkable situation.”

Facebook proved to be a hostile environment towards Jaissle’s position - with 54 per cent wanting him gone. The results appeared damning until a YouTube poll returned a 57 per cent vote in his favour. For context, WhatsApp voted 28 to 24 against the Newcastle boss.

Across all three platforms, “Jaissle in” defeated “Jaissle out” and “don’t know” combined by a single vote. It should be noted that fans were surveyed while the Everton result remained raw.

Tensions were high - as they tend to be on social media when the Magpies lose. But as The Gazette’s findings show, Newcastle fans are far from United on Jaissle just 10 weeks into the 2026-27 campaign.
