The Magpies appear to have won the race to sign the 16-year-old Queens Park midfielder – the same club who nurtured Liverpool star Andy Robertson before his professional break with Dundee United.

Old Firm duo Rangers and Celtic have been monitoring the player’s performances this season, with Thomson having appeared NINE times for the amateur club, who play at Scotland's national stadium Hampden Park.

According to the Scottish Sun, Thomson will leave the Spiders imminently to pen a two and a half year deal at St James’s Park, with the youngster set to be thrown into the youth setup at Benton.

The report claims United will pay around £50,000 plus add ons for the Scotland under-17 international.
