The Magpies are said to be close to agreeing an initial £6million deal with Celtic to sign Norway international defender Kristoffer Ajer

And the Mirror claim United are at the head of the queue for the central defender.

In the past Ajer has been watched by the likes of Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester City.

United boss Steve Bruce is keen to strengthen his central defensive ranks this summer and is likely to allow Florian Lejeune to leave as part of that backline rebuild.

It is thought the preference is to keep Federico Fernandez and Fabian Schar, whose deals both come to an end this summer.
