Newcastle United closing in on first signing of the summer – report

Newcastle United are reportedly closing in on their first signing of the summer.

The Magpies are said to be close to agreeing an initial £6million deal with Celtic to sign Norway international defender Kristoffer Ajer

The 23-year-old, also wanted by newly promoted Norwich City, is now into the final year of his Hoops deal – and having not penned a new one, was always likely to be sold this summer window.

And the Mirror claim United are at the head of the queue for the central defender.

Norway's Kristoffer Ajer (L) fights for the ball with Montenegro's Stevan Jovetic (R) during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualification Group G football match between Montenegro and Norway at the Podgorica City Stadium, in Podgorica, on March 30, 2021.

In the past Ajer has been watched by the likes of Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester City.

United boss Steve Bruce is keen to strengthen his central defensive ranks this summer and is likely to allow Florian Lejeune to leave as part of that backline rebuild.

It is thought the preference is to keep Federico Fernandez and Fabian Schar, whose deals both come to an end this summer.
