Newcastle United fans deliver shock 8% verdict on £70m transfer decision as Marc Guehi breaks silence
The Magpies tried in vain to sign Guehi this summer but saw their efforts frustrated by Crystal Palace who didn’t want to lose their key man. At the time, Newcastle’s failure to land Guehi was seen as a huge missed opportunity, particularly with Fabian Schar’s red card exposing their threadbare options in the middle of defence.
However, Palace’s struggles this campaign, coupled with Newcastle’s fairly solid defensive record, mean there is now a completely different outlook on that supposed summer failure. A move in January for Guehi is not completely off the cards either, with reports they may look again towards Selhurst Park to strengthen their backline.

Hide AdThe Shields Gazette conducted a survey of their readers to see what the general opinion on Guehi is and whether they believe the club should move for him in January. Surprisingly, only 8% of respondents believe that Magpies should make a move for Guehi no matter the cost of the transfer.
The 24-year-old has entered the final two years of his contract at Palace and will have just 18 months left on that deal when the winter window opens. A £70m price tag, which was quoted during the summer, is likely to be severely reduced in January due to his contract situation.
45% of respondents to our survey believe that Newcastle should move for Guehi, but only if they pay no more than £40m. 47%, meanwhile, believe the Magpies should move onto other targets.
Speaking about the interest shown in him during the summer, Guehi told TalkSport earlier this week: “Since then I’ve just tried to get my head down, tried to get to work [amid Newcastle transfer rumours]. It’s been a tough start for us at Palace, but I think everyone’s pulling in the right direction to try and get ourselves back to where we want to be.”
Newcastle United will get a glimpse at what they missed out on when Palace and the Magpies meet at Selhurst Park at the end of November.
