The 24-year-old unexpectedly played 17 times in the Premier League last season following long-term injuries to Virgil Van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip.

However, with those players set to return in August onwards, Phillips is set to drop down the pecking order.

According to The Sun, Steve Bruce and Sean Dyche are monitoring his situation with a view to launching a possible swoop.

Toon ‘enquire’ about Portuguese full-back

Newcastle are among three English clubs to enquire about Benfica’s £13m-rated full-back Nuno Tavares, reports in Portugal say.

Tavares, 21, was subject of strong interest from Napoli, however Gennaro Gattuso’s departure as manager has delayed a move from happening.

His release clause stands at £88million but the Portuguese club are willing to negotiate a significantly reduced fee.

Indeed, O Jogo claims Newcastle, Brighton and Southampton have shown an interest in signing Tavares.
