Newcastle United's market value compared to Premier League rivals ahead of January transfers

How does Newcastle United's market value compare to their Premier League rivals?

The January transfer window is now open, but whether or not Newcastle United decide to use it to strengthen their squad remains to be seen.

The Magpies have climbed to ninth in the Premier League table after winning their last two games, but still have just eight wins and 29 points on the board after 20 matches - which is not good enough given the expectations on Tyneside nowadays. However, Eddie Howe certainly has a squad capable of much more, with summer signings like Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa augmenting the existing and considerable quality of Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Co.

But just how much is that squad worth compared to the rest of the Premier League, according to Transfermarkt?

Newcastle’s €713.2m market value is a €0.25m decrease from December, but there are still only six clubs in the Premier League with a higher market value. Midfield duo Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes are the Magpies’ most valuable players at €75m, while they’re joined by five other players in the €40m+ region: Nick Woltemade (€70m), Anthony Gordon (€60m), Anthony Elanga (€50m), Tino Livramento (€40m), Malick Thiaw (€40m).

Newcastle’s Tyne-Wear rivals, Sunderland, are down in 16th on €364.13m, while it’ll come as no surprise to find out that Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool are the only four sides with market values north of €1bn.

What has Eddie Howe said about January transfers?

When everyone is fit and available, Newcastle have one of the strongest starting line-ups and squads in the Premier League. With that in mind, it’s no surprise to see Eddie Howe being reserved when discussing January transfers - insisting fitness will dictate whether or not he dips into the market.

“Without evading the question, it's about where our squad is at in terms of injuries,” Howe responded when asked about transfers this month. “So if everyone's fit and available, I think we've got a really well-balanced squad, and it would be difficult in January to improve that squad. If we don't and we lose players, especially defensively with the game schedule we have in January, then that leaves a totally different opinion. So I think it's based on that.”

When asked about a possible ‘marquee signing’, Howe answered: “'Marquee signing', I don't know quite what that means. I suppose you're talking about a big financial outlay? “I don't think that's the desire in this month for various reasons, because I don't think it's a great month necessarily to make that kind of signing. “Any signing that we do make in this window will restrict our ability to do business in the summer, so I think we've got to be really careful that we make the right decisions for the here and now and for the future.

“We're still in that position where PSR will influence every decision that we make, so that's where we have to be really smart. “I don't think that's necessarily the wish in this month, but I think our injury situation, to a degree, will impact what we do and don't do.”
