Alan Shearer reveals Alexander Isak chat before £125m Newcastle United x Liverpool move

Newcastle United’s current strikers have the perfect man to turn to should they need any goalscoring advice.

Alan Shearer is open to helping any Newcastle United striker improve their game should they seek his advice.

And when asked about offering to help the current crop, the club legend highlighted a chat with Alexander Isak during his time at St James’ Park. Will Osula, Yoane Wissa and Matias Fernandez-Pardo have scored just two Premier League goals between them this season.

Newcastle’s attacking prowess has come under question following two limp home performances. The Magpies lost 1-0 to Aston Villa and Everton - cranking up the pressure on new boss Matthias Jaissle.

In truth, Newcastle have struggled to replace Isak, who scored 62 goals in 109 appearances at St James’ Park. While now detested on Tyneside due to his controversial Liverpool move, the Swede’s goals were vital to both Champions League qualifications and the Carabao Cup run.

Alan Shearer offers advice

As part of a Q&A for The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer was asked about potential returning to Newcastle as a striker coach. He responded: “Training-wise, I think it would be too difficult because the coaching staff have their own people. But if anyone ever wanted to sit and talk to me, then clearly I’d do that.

“I went there and spoke to Alexander Isak, not specifically about what he should do better because he was doing so well at the time. But I’d go in and give advice, if they wanted my opinion.

“I always message new strikers when they come to Newcastle anyway and ask if they need any help, whether that’s on the pitch or off it. Finding houses, doing whatever… I would always help in that way. But I know the club have that ticked off.”

Shearer also reflected on Newcastle’s dismal showing against Everton on Monday. He added: “We’re really struggling to score goals. I was at the game against Everton at home. It was so poor.

“I can’t really work out what we’re trying to do. We’re not creating chances and so open for teams to play through us at the minute. We’re struggling.

“They need a big result against Fulham at the weekend because being booed off is not nice. The manager and the players can have no complaints because it was a really poor performance.”
