Dan Burn emotional in must-watch Newcastle United interview after World Cup call-up

Dan Burn is one of three Newcastle United players included in England’s squad for the World Cup.

Dan Burn is “buzzing” after earning a spot in England’s squad for the upcoming World Cup.

A fairytale week last March saw the Blyth native earn his maiden Three Lions call-up at 33. Less than 48 hours later, Burn scored the opener as Newcastle United won domestic silverware for the first time in 70 years.

He has since gone on to become a staple in Tuchel’s squads - earning six England caps. He will be joined by Toon teammates Anthony Gordon and Tino Livramento although, surprisingly, there is no place for Lewis Hall.

‘I’m buzzing’ - Dan Burn

Speaking to Sky Sports, Burn opened up about how he learned about his World Cup selection. The 34-year-old backed himself to make the final cut but remained anxious until the call came.

"I’m buzzing," Burn said. “I’m glad Friday is here, I’ve known for a couple of days and I’ve not been able to say anything to anyone. I got a text to say he (Tuchel) would call me between four and six so I sat by my phone for hours.

"When I first got called up last year it was a shock. I wasn’t expecting it. But this time I’ve been pretty confident about it. I have been pretty confident about it but I feel like, until you are called you, don't know.

"I feel like you compare it to when we won the (Carabao Cup]) final. I had dreamt it that much in my head as a kid that, when it happens, you don't really know how to feel about it. I am not going into it with the unknown of what is going to happen. I have played over 500 games now.

“At every level, I have felt like I have played well every time I have made a step up in competition so it is nothing that I am going there worried about. I am going there full of confidence and I want to help the team however I am asked to do that. It is very exciting."

Thomas Tuchel on team spirit

Explaining his decisions, Tuchel emphasised the importance on team spirit as the Three Lions prepare to end a 60-year barren spell. He told reporters: "From day one, we were clear we were trying to build the best possible team. Not necessarily the 26 most talented players. Teams win championships - and what we're trying to achieve can only be achieved as a team.

“Nine defenders for four positions, seven midfielders for three positions and seven forwards for three positions. We have players ready and committed to the idea of team spirit and being unselfish.

"We have specialists for different scenarios - when we're leading or chasing a result. We have set-piece specialists for that and we want to be a strong penalty team, we have specialists for that. The majority of this selection is from the players who were with us in September, October and November.

"It's important to say I'm grateful to all the players who helped us qualify. I tried to show my appreciation in telling them in personal phone calls. I called every player who was at least once with us to tell them my decision - even if it was a disappointing message."
