'Biggest mistake' - Ruud Gullit defends Sean Steur after intense Newcastle United transfer backlash

Dutch media were highly critical of Sean Steur for leaving Ajax to join Newcastle United.

Former Newcastle United manager Ruud Gullit has backed Sean Steur to succeed at St James’ Park.

Toon chiefs stumped up £20million to sign the youngster from Ajax in June. His close control and playmaking ability immediately impressed in a pre-season clash at Gateshead.

Matthias Jaissle handed Steur a major show of confidence with a start against Liverpool for the Premier League opener. The 18-year-old - who impressed against Hull City yesterday - has been in and out of the team as he adjusts to his new environment.

In an interview with ComeOn, Dutch icon Gullit - who managed Newcastle for a year - tipped Steur to deliver at Premier League level. He has publicly supported the prodigy after receiving backlash in his native country for leaving Ajax.

“In Holland, people said that Sean Steur was making the biggest mistake because it was all too early,” Gullit said. “We’ve seen a lot of players who go too early never to be seen again. I hope that he will do well at Newcastle United, I really do.

“I have been pleasantly surprised by how well Newcastle have been doing and I am very, very happy for them because their fans deserve it. But the competition has only just started.

“I will watch with hope and enthusiasm that Sean Steur grows into the team and they bring the club success. He still needs to learn a lot. He’s still so young. Let’s see what happens.”

Why Sean Steur joined Newcastle United

On arrival, Steur spoke about his dream of testing himself in the Premier League. He said: "It's an incredible feeling to be here. It's a giant club in the Premier League and it was always my dream to play in the best league in the world, so this is really exciting.

"I was at home at Ajax - I joined when I was seven and I leave with only good memories, but when a club like Newcastle comes for you, it's really hard to say no. The last few days have gone fast and I'm very happy to join.

"I'm a player who likes to get on the ball and play forward all the time. I'm happy playing between the lines and I feel I have a lot of energy in my game. I just want to win."
