Newcastle United official reason why Sean Steur & Matias Fernandez-Pardo withdrew v Hull City

Newcastle United issue official Sean Steur and Matias Fernandez-Pardo update after their withdrawals against Hull City.

Matthias Jaissle has downplayed fears that Sean Steur and Matias Fernandez-Pardo picked up injuries during Newcastle United’s hard-fought 2-1 win over Hull City.

Goals from Joe Willock and Lewis Hall fired the Magpies into a 2-0 lead inside the opening seven minutes at St James’ Park. Yoane Wissa had the chance to make it 3-0 just before half-time but saw his effort saved by Konstantinos Tzolakis.

Steur went down needing treatment before being replaced by Fabian Schar in the 66th minute. Less than a minute later, Mohamed-Ali Cho pulled one back for the Tigers.

The same happened to Fernandez-Pardo 10 minutes later, with the Belgian withdrawn for Bazoumana Toure. The visitors pushed for an equaliser but United managed to hold out to clinch their second Premier League win of the campaign.

Jaissle was without several first-team players, including Tino Livramento, Amar Dedic, Nico Gonzalez, Jacob Ramsey, Dan Burn, Joelinton and Will Osula, which resulted in academy quartet Mason Miley, Michael Mills, Miodrag Pivas and Kyran Thompson being named on the bench.

But Jaissle is hopeful Steur and Fernandez-Pardo only suffered from cramps as they continue to get used to the demands of the Premier League following their respective summer moves from Ajax and Monaco.

Asked about the pair’s withdrawal, Jaissle said: “Hopefully only fatigue and tired legs. Again, it’s part of our brave approach in the summer signings and the brave approach for the long-term journey here in Newcastle, because these are young lads.

“You saw that after 50 or 60 minutes their legs are getting tired, so this is the adaptation they need now for the physicality of that league.”

Newcastle now have a three-week break before they visit Coventry City on Monday, October 12. And by that point, Jaissle hopes to have several of his senior players back available.

“For all the other seven players, I don't want to go into detail,” Jaissle said. “It would not be the right way here in the press conference. But again, I hope really, and we all hope really that after the break, we see at least one or the other back.”
