After losing three of their opening four matches, Newcastle have got things back on track since the last international break with a seven game unbeaten run which included five wins and five clean sheets.
Newcastle have climbed up to eighth in the Premier League table after eight matches while they sit top of their Champions League group after a 0-0 draw at AC Milan and 4-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain at St James’ Park. They also progressed to the last-16 of the Carabao Cup with a 1-0 win at home to Manchester City.
But at this early stage in the season, who has shone and who has struggled for The Magpies so far? We have looked at every member of Newcastle’s squad plus any younger players who have made an appearance and ranked and rated them based on their contributions so far.
Ratings also take into account expectations relative to the players in question. For example 17-year-old midfielder Lewis Miley is not expected to produce the same level of performances as £52million summer signing Sandro Tonali.
In total, we have rated 28 Newcastle United players to determine our top performers from the opening 11 matches in all competitions during the opening two months of the season. Ratings will be updated periodically throughout the season.
Here are the ratings in full...

17. Sean Longstaff - 7
Was arguably one of Newcastle's best performers in the opening months of the season but his form dropped after returning from injury. Eddie Howe claimed the midfielder was playing through the pain barrier but he still managed to end the season with eight goals to his name, including one on the Champions League. | Getty Images

18. Jacob Murphy - 7
Played a key role in the 4-0 win over Crystal Palace with a goal and two assists before dislocating his shoulder in the very next game. Was one of Newcastle's best performers in the final weeks of the season with a goal and four assists in the final five Premier League matches. | Getty Images

19. Dan Burn - 7
Suffered with a back injury earlier in the season and came under intense criticism given the number of goals Newcastle started to concede down his side. Still managed several solid displays at left-back and was particularly impressive after moving into a more central role in Sven Botman's absence. His header and celebration against Paris Saint-Germain will live long in the memory. | Getty Images

20. Lewis Miley - 7.5
Lewis Miley was a breath of fresh air at Newcastle United in 2023-24. At just 17-years-old, he established himself as a dependable member of Eddie Howe's first-team squad during a difficult period. Probably played more football than Howe would have liked due to the club's injury crisis before his season was cut short due to injury. | AFP via Getty Images
