£67m Newcastle United duo at risk of Premier League suspension & Joelinton ban 'inevitable' - on one condition
Newcastle United are only seven matches into the Premier League season but have several players at risk of suspension.
Newcastle United stars Jacob Murphy and Yoane Wissa are at risk of a Premier League suspension after picking up three bookings already.
Wissa was shown his third yellow card in the Premier League this season last time out in the 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa at St James’ Park following a challenge on goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.
Murphy was booked for dissent in Newcastle’s 2-1 win over Hull City before the international break but has managed to avoid further yellow cards against Coventry City and Aston Villa.

The pair avoid picking up a further two bookings in Newcastle’s next 12 league matches. The final league game before the cut-off point is away to Chelsea on January 3.
Given the number of games between now and then, every Newcastle player is still at risk of a yellow card suspension. After Murphy and Wissa, Newcastle’s next most cautioned players in the league this season are Sven Botman, Joelinton and Nico Gonzalez with two bookings each.
Given Joelinton has only played two Premier League matches this season, a ban for the Brazilian feels inevitable unless he is on his best behaviour.
Anthony Elanga, Lukas Hornicek, Tino Livramento, Lewis Miley, William Osula and Jacob Ramsey all have one booking each.

What Premier League rules say about bookings
Premier League rules state that any player who accumulates five bookings inside the opening 19 Premier League matches must serve a one-match ban. Any player who receives 10 bookings inside 32 games receives a two-match ban, a punishment handed out to Joelinton last season.
After the 10-booking, 32-game threshold is passed, any player shown 15 bookings over the course of the season is handed a three-match ban. To date, no player has ever been cautioned that many times during a single Premier League campaign.
Do bookings impact cup competitions?
Booking suspensions are competition-specific in England. So a suspension picked up as a result of accumulating yellow cards in the Premier League is served only in the Premier League while a suspension picked up in the cup competitions is served in that specific competition.
But the rules are different for red cards, which do transcend competitions. Newcastle have found that out the hard way on several occasions with Anthony Gordon missing the Carabao Cup final in 2025 due to a red card picked up in the FA Cup.
Nick Pope also missed the 2023 Carabao Cup final due to a red card picked up in the Premier League, while Bruno Guimaraes, who was sent off in the Carabao Cup semi-final win over Southampton in 2023, missed Newcastle’s next three Premier League games but was available for the final.
Players booked twice in the Carabao Cup or FA Cup are handed a one-match suspension. Sean Steur, Ewen Jaouen and Jacob Ramsey are all one booking away from suspension for Newcastle in that competition as they prepare to travel to Everton next week.
