The Magpies No2 is a wanted man this summer, having struggled for gametime since the arrival of Martin Dubravka.

And with just a year left on his current deal the exit door appeared to be looming for the former Nottingham Forest keeper, who joined the club in a cut-price joint deal along with skipper Jamaal Lascelles.

Football Insider claim the Championship club made a move for the 29-year-old goalkeeper ahead of the new season. But the deal has faltered at the first hurdle with United reportedly keen to hang on to their experienced back-up.

Meanwhile, the announcement of Jeff Hendrick as United’s second signing of the summer is imminent, with the player set to put pen to paper on a lengthy deal after his release by Burnley.

The Republic of Ireland international follows Geordie keeper Mark Gillespie through the door this summer and will likely see any interest in Nabil Bentaleb fade.
