‘Here we go!’ - Fabrizio Romano confirms Manchester United deal for Newcastle United favourite Karl Darlow

Karl Darlow spent nine years at St James’ Park and is on the brink of joining Manchester United.

Former Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow is set to join Manchester United on a free transfer.

The 35-year-old made 100 appearances for the Magpies over a nine-year period before leaving in 2023. Darlow was a key component of Rafa Benitez’s side that won the Championship in 2017.

While his role lessened once Martin Dubravka arrived, Darlow was called upon heavily in the 2020-21 season due to injury. Ultimately, the promise of first-team opportunities saw the Wales international join Leeds United, where he eventually dislodged Illan Meslier between the sticks.

Manchester United to sign Karl Darlow

Man United are now on the brink of signing Darlow - handing him a surprise opportunity as his career approaches its conclusion. Michael Carrick is keen to add an experienced backup goalkeeper to his ranks.

Darlow is ideal for the Red Devils given his efforts for Leeds last season. He also helps Carrick’s squad comply with the Premier League’s homegrown quota.

Italian sports journalist Fabrizio Romano reported via X that Darlow will sign for Man United today. He wrote: “Manchester United agree deal to sign Karl Darlow as new backup goalkeeper, here we go! Deal done and signature to follow on Friday.”

Karl Darlow on leaving Newcastle United

Speaking earlier this year, Darlow declared his “love” for Newcastle while noting that the time was right for him to move on. He said: “I’d been linked here a couple of times before that in different windows. It was a place that always kept cropping up, almost three of four windows before I actually came.

“I felt there was something there, that I wanted to go and see what I could achieve here. Yeah, absolutely (it was the right move). No doubt about it.

“I think it came at the right time for me at Newcastle. I’d been there a long time and don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love the place and I love the club, but at the time I wasn’t playing and I was getting no younger.”
