According to a report in the Mirror, the Venezuelan international has "told friends he wants to join the Magpies on a permanent basis".

Rondon spent the whole of last season on loan at St James's Park from West Brom, scoring 11 Premier League goals in 30 starts for United.

And should Rafa Benitez stay beyond his current contract, which ends on June 30, he wants to strike a deal to keep Rondon, currently away at the Copa America, at United.

Speaking about his future in May, Rondon said: "When I arrived here, Newcastle was the first choice, but you never know what happens in football.

"At the moment, I have to go back to West Brom and wait on whether West Brom get promoted or not.

"I have to say thank you to the supporters, the staff, Rafa and the teammates. I don’t know what’ll happen in the future."

The 29-year-old, available for a fee of £16.5million this summer due to a clause in his contract, said: "I always say, if I can’t stay, I have to say ‘thank you’ to everyone at the club

"When I arrived here, I felt like I was at home. I’m settled, my family is happy.

"It’s difficult to say something now because we don’t know what’ll happen with Rafa. We have to wait, and after that, if I stay, I just bring the same things: hard work and goals."

Marseille, AS Roma and Fenerbahce have also been linked with former Zenit striker Rondon.
