Steve Bruce issues Newcastle United injury update on Allan Saint-Maximin

Saint-Maximin suffered an ankle injury in the 3-0 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion at St James’s Park earlier this month.

The winger missed Sunday’s Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur, but could be involved in tonight’s Carabao Cup tie against Newport County tonight along with Ryan Fraser, who has recovered from a groin injury.

“Allan trained yesterday,” said head coach Steve Bruce. “As you know, he twisted his ankle against Brighton. He trained yesterday pain-free. We're just hoping now that he doesn't have any reaction to it.”

Meanwhile, winger Matt Ritchie needs surgery on the shoulder he injured against Tottenham. Bruce said: “It looks as if he'll need an operation and it will be performed very shortly. We're looking at a lengthy lay-off. We know how valuable he is around the training ground, and what he is.”
