Shelvey was disappointing in Newcastle United’s 4-1 defeat to Manchester United at St James’s Park. The 28-year-old midfielder, however, has been hampered by a groin injury in recent weeks, according to Bruce.

“Look, I'm sure he'd be disappointed last week,” said United’s head coach. “He’s been carrying a bit of an injury. He puts himself out there when maybe he shouldn't have done.

“He's had a sore groin now for the past two, three weeks – and tried to play with it. It's come to the stage where he's not going to be able to, but I've got nothing but the hugest respect for Jonjo. He's a very, very good player, and most players wouldn't be playing with the injury that he's played with.”

Bruce – who has the Longstaff brothers, Sean and Matty, back from illness and injury respectively – says he will need to “address” Shelvey’s problem, which could see him miss the game against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux.

"We'll probably address that over the next two or three weeks,” said Bruce.

Shelvey signed a new deal at Newcastle earlier this year keeping him at the club until 2023.

Meanwhile, Shelvey's midfield colleague Isaac Hayden could be fit for the Wolves fixture. Hayden was forced off last weekend with what Bruce feared was a hamstring problem.

Bruce said: “We're hoping it was a bit more cramp rather than a hamstring strain.”
