Steve Bruce reveals David Beckham's advice to him over Newcastle United job
Bruce this week succeeded Rafa Benitez at St James’s Park. The 58-year-old had been warned off a “toxic situation” by close friend Alan Shearer, a longstanding critic of Mike Ashley, the club’s owner.

Asked if he had had friends telling him to take the head coach job, Bruce said: “Yeah, tons of them. ‘You’ve got to do it’, people said. I don’t want to mention names, but David Beckham was one of them. I’ll have to show my daughter that text message.”
Bruce is in Shanghai, China, for the club’s Premier League Asia Trophy third-place game against West Ham United tomorrow. The 58-year-old will watch the game from the stands at the Hongkou Stadium.
