It has been almost nine years since Yohan Cabaye’s winner gave Newcastle their first, and so far only, Premier League win at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’.

The Magpies have lost all but one of their trips to Manchester since that game - but they head there this weekend full of confidence that they may be able to finally end their drought.

Nine goals in their last two games mean Newcastle will be in a buoyant mood on Sunday, however, they will have to overcome some pretty disastrous statistics if they are to leave Old Trafford with three points this weekend.

Defensive woes

One of the major reasons for Newcastle’s transformation under Eddie Howe has been their renewed defensive resilience - and the Magpies will need all of that on Sunday should they wish to come away with all three points against Erik Ten Hag’s side.

In 27 Premier League matches at Old Trafford, Newcastle have conceded 63 goals - with 21 of those coming in their last seven trips.

Their 4-1 defeat last campaign was the third time in five visits that the Magpies went down by that scoreline.

Tied in with their defensive woes is Newcastle’s seemingly annual tradition of throwing away early leads at Old Trafford.

In three of their last five trips to the ‘Theatre of Dreams’, Newcastle have taken the lead, only to lose every time.

Their 3-2 loss under Rafa Benitez, where early goals from Yoshinori Muto and Kenedy had the Magpies 2-0 up at the break, was a particularly hard result to take.

In the other two games of this mini-run, Newcastle scored equalisers but were unable to hold on for a point and ran out 3-1 and 4-1 losers.

Although the 37-year-old hasn’t been a regular starter under Ten Hag, he could have a major say in Sunday’s result however, based on his record against Newcastle, Magpies fans will be hoping that isn’t the case.

Ronaldo has scored eight goals against Newcastle, only managing more against three other Premier League sides during his career.

The Portuguese star bagged his first ever Premier League hat-trick against Newcastle in their 6-0 hammering in January 2008 - following that up with another treble 13 years later in his first game back as a Red Devils player following his move from Juventus.

Ronaldo has also never lost against Newcastle, winning 11 of his 13 appearances against the Magpies.

As mentioned, Newcastle have won just once at Old Trafford in the Premier League - their worst record at any ground where they have played over 25 games at, barring Anfield where the Magpies have yet to taste a Premier League win.

Stamford Bridge is the other stadium that has seen Newcastle register just one Premier League win at.

Their current good form, and Manchester United’s perceived weaknesses, mean that this is the best chance they have had in a while of coming away from Old Trafford with three points in the bag.
