Wilson has netted just once since the return from the World Cup, coming in a frenetic opening to the clash with West Ham last month. His dip in form has led to suggestions that Howe may pick Alexander Isak in his starting XI on Sunday, a move which would see Wilson drop to the bench.

Because of his work permit not coming in time, Isak missed the game at Molineux earlier in the season and had to watch on from the stands as Allan Saint-Maximin’s late stunner rescued a point for the Magpies. Wilson, meanwhile, sat out that game after picking up an injury and wouldn’t return to action until October.

Newcastle’s no.9 will be hoping to feature this weekend and end an eight-game goal drought against Wolves. Wilson hasn’t played more games and minutes against any other team without scoring, a run that stretches 8 games and 661 minutes.

The 31-year-old spoke about the team’s struggles in-front of goal on his Footballer’s Football Podcast with Michail Antonio, revealing he’s aiming to ‘fix’ their lack of goals: “We haven't been scoring our chances,” Wilson said.

“I'm partly to blame because I'm a striker and I take full responsibility, I would never shy away from owning up and taking accountability that I need to fix up in front of goal.”

A win for Newcastle on Sunday, who have lost their last three games in all-competitions, would be just their second victory of the calendar year.
