The Magpies head coach has made six changes from the 2-2 draw with West Ham United with DeAndre Yedlin, Nabil Bentaleb, Matt Ritchie, Fabian Schar, Danny Rose and Valentino Lazaro starting.

Allan Saint-Maximin, Jamaal Lascelles, Andy Carroll and Isaac Hayden are missing from the matchday squad due to injury, while Dwight Gayle, Javier Manquillo and Miguel Almiron are on the bench.

And Bruce’s team selection has added confusion among United’s fanbase – some believing it could be a 5-4-1 formation, or possibly even 4-3-3.

Here is how fans reacted to the team news on social media:

@MichaeINUFC: What on earth is that defence and midfield.

@OwenNUFC_: What formation are we playing?

@Dummaldini: is Schar in midfield?

@ToonMouthTyne: Please tell me he's not playing a back 5 with Krafth as a makeshift central defender???

@DaveNUFCWhite: I think it might be a back 4 with Krafth as a CB with Schär in holding midfield…

@gw8650: Could be 4-4-1-1? Krafth Right Back, Fede and Schar Centre back, Yedlin Right Wing, with Lazaro playing just behind Joe like where Longstaff played against Bournemouth?

@nickwood88: Can’t wait to watch 90 mins of struggling to get the ball out of our box

@CalumNicholls: We better not be playing 5 at the back

@KierenW6: Please don’t not tell me it’s 5 at the back again
