'Really tough' - Yoane Wissa gives emotional interview as Newcastle United relish £55m 'new signing'

Yoane Wissa scored twice as Newcastle United came from a goal down to beat Spanish club Valencia in their latest pre-season friendly.

There were a number of positives during Newcastle United’s pre-season friendly win against La Liga club Valencia - and perhaps biggest plus point came with a lively performance from striker Yoane Wissa.

The former Brentford striker struggled during his first season at St James Park as an injury suffered on international duty just days after joining the Magpies hampered his attempts to find form and momentum throughout the remainder of the campaign. After scoring just three goals in 28 appearances, Wissa seized the opportunity to regain some confidence at the World Cup finals as he scored three goals in the group stage to help DR Congo reach the last 32 of the competition before their run was ended by England.

Wissa has reportedly impressed upon his return to pre-season training with Newcastle and he was at the heart of the action in Saturday’s win at the Mestalla Stadium as he came off the bench to score two second-half goals to ensure Matthias Jaissle claimed a victory in his first game in charge of the Magpies.

Speaking after the game, Wissa expressed his determination to help Newcastle ‘achieve something great’ during the German’s first season on Tyneside.

He told NUFCTV: "After a tough season for me, physically and mentally, the World Cup - especially playing with my national team - has been good. So now new manager, new Yoane Wissa. That's what I hope. I'm going to help the team achieve something great this season."

On being able to feature in pre-season after missing out 12 months ago ahead of his move to Tyneside, Wissa added: "Of course it's really important. First, the body needs that, you need to run hard and feel sharp, and also find the teammates and create something.

"So I didn't have that last season and of course when you come and just arrive, a big injury like this is really tough. But the past is the past, so I'm just looking forward now to this season. Hopefully as I said I will be a part of the team and try to help the team as much as I can."
