'Nice' - Paul Blackett comes back to haunt Spennymoor Town in 1-0 South Shields win

Paul Blackett scored against former club Spennymoor Town to secure a 1-0 win for South Shields.

Paul Blackett was delighted to be back on the scoresheet to earn South Shields FC a 1-0 win over North East rivals Spennymoor Town.

Blackett’s 23rd-minute strike against his former club ended a run of two matches without a goal, as the Mariners moved up to third in the National League North table, one point behind leaders Oxford City, whom they travel to face on Saturday.

“Yeah nice,” Blackett said after the victory at The Brewery Field. “I haven't scored for a couple of games now, so it's nice to be back on the score sheet.

“I felt like the game was there for more goals for us, but the most important thing is we kept a clean sheet. We haven't done that in a little while, and it's important we get back to keeping clean sheets.”

Meanwhile, Spennymoor remain bottom of the table, eight points from safety.

“Tough game,” Blackett added. “Obviously we rode the storm second half. I thought we were really good first half and then they obviously put a lot more bodies forward and pinned us back a little bit, and we had to sort of ride that storm for the first 10-15 minutes of the second half.

“Then I thought we looked dangerous on the counter-attack without sort of finishing the game off, which was quite disappointing to be honest.

“It was a typical sort of derby game. They've obviously gone through a little bit of a tough spell and then going 1-0 down at half-time they've sort of got nothing to lose.

“They've put bodies forward and we've sort of got to stand up to that and defend it which I thought we'd done really, really well.”
