Blackpool boss Neil Critchley has a Newcastle United theory ahead of Sunderland clash

Madine was an option considered by Phil Parkinson in January as he weighed-up attacking reinforcements at Sunderland, but the striker eventually headed to the North West after the Black Cats opted to sign Kyle Lafferty instead.

And while Madine is yet to make a real impact at Bloomfield Road – due in part to some injury woes – manager Critchley is backing him to shine against Sunderland owing to his roots on Tyneside.

Indeed, it’s for that reason that the Blackpool chief is confident that the 29-year-old will shake-off a troubling neck issue in time to feature against Parkinson’s side.

“We’re hoping he will train later today, if not then hopefully tomorrow,” said Critchley, speaking to the Blackpool Gazette.

“There’s a chance with Gary. He’s feeling a little bit better and with him being a Geordie and this being Sunderland, I’m sure he’ll be doing everything he can to be part of the game on Saturday.

“I know he’ll be desperate to be involved.”

The Seasiders, meanwhile, are preparing as usual for the clash despite reports that fixtures may be moved behind closed doors.

“At the moment we just prepare as normal, we have to, until we hear any different,” Critchley added.

“We’re waiting for guidance from the government and the footballing authorities. Until that happens, we just have to get on with our jobs.”
