Everything you need to know about South Shields’ Christmas lights switch-on
The South Shields Christmas lights event is set to see East 17 turn on the display and perform for the crowd.
On Thursday, November 21, at 6pm, 90s pop group East 17 will join the Mayor and Mayoress to turn on the South Shields Market Square Christmas lights display, outside The Word.
Thousands are expected to descend on South Tyneside for the Christmas lights switch-on events over the next couple of days, including this one in South Shields, with the Mayor and Mayoress of South Tyneside, Councillor Norman Dick and Mrs Jean Williamson.
While East 17 will be on hand to press the all-important button, they are also set to perform a selection of their greatest hits during the event including their much-loved single often played at Christmas – Stay Another Day.
Throughout the evening there will be further performances from the Choirmaster group, an appearance from stars of The Customs House pantomime, Snow White, and street entertainers.
Coun Norman Dick said: “The Christmas light switch-on events across South Tyneside are guaranteed to be spectacular with a colourful display of lights sparkling through each town.
“There is always a great festive atmosphere at the events and it’s a fantastic way to mark the beginning of the festive season.
“We look forward to seeing everyone there to enjoy the festive entertainment, have fun and celebrate this special time of year.”
It will be followed by Jarrow Christmas Lights Switch On and Boldon Christmas Festival on Friday, November 22 and Hebburn Christmas Lights Switch On on Monday, November 25.
As part of The Custom House’s 25th Anniversary celebrations, pantomime Snow White is showing from Wednesday, November 27 to Sunday, January 5.
