Readers' delight as Marsden Inn gets thumbs-up from food hygiene inspectors

The Marsden Inn has secured a four-star food hygiene rating since being taken over by new boss Michael Ward.

The Marsden Lane venue was given a one-star rating in July but secured its improved result last month.

Michael – who also became the new boss at The Lookout on the Lawe Top in 2019 – took over at the Marsden Inn in December.

Michael said: "The staff have done really, really well. They have all clubbed together and done really well to get this rating.

"We are all over the moon, especially when the pub was going to close last year. The customers are also over the moon."

Readers commenting on the Gazette’s Facebook page were certainly delighted to see the pub turning the corner.

Lesley Bailey said: “If it had closed it could have been an eyesore. It makes a great picture when the runners run past on the Great North Run.

“Gives Southerners a look at what the North East is like.”

Lynsey Mason was impressed by the team effort involved in transforming the business: “Well done to the staff and management,” she said. “Hard work has paid off.”

Moira Stewart wrote: “Great news that such a wonderful place has been saved,” while Steven Westy was full of praise for Michael.

“That's because the manager/owner is fantastic at his job,” he said.

Annette Mctavy added: “Me and my family love the place. Lovely food and lovely staff,” while Ann Brenen said: “Love it there- we often go with the kids and the food is excellent. Lovely staff too.

Vicky Rose had been impressed on a recent visit: “I came last Sunday for my dinner – great value for money and the plates piled high,” she said.

“I could only manage half and I can scoff for fun. Deffo coming back.”
