Coastal search for missing person goes on through early hours

Emergency teams worked through the early hours as they joined in a search for a person reported missing on the coast.

Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team and South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade (SSVLB) were called out at 2.50am today, Sunday, September 27, to help Northumbria Police search for the missing person in Marsden.

The callout came during wet, cold and windy weather and was brought to a close when information was relayed that the person they were searching for had been found elsewhere.

A spokesperson for the Coastguard said: “Working with South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade, an extensive search was carried out in poor weather conditions between South Shields and Whitburn.

"With the search area covered and more information coming through as to the person’s location to be away from the coast, we were stood down just before 5am.”

The team added people should call 999 and ask for the Coastguard if reporting an emergency on the coast.
