Man arrested and South Shields address searched after firearms concern

One man has been arrested as police search an address in South Shields on Tuesday.

Concerns were raised on Monday, July 19, when a man taken to hospital after a suspected overdose told hospital staff he may have access to firearms.

An investigation has been launched following the report and police are searching an address in the area of Marlborough Street North in South Shields.

A 44-year-old man has been arrested and remains in custody.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before midday yesterday (Monday) we received a report of concern regarding a male who had been admitted to hospital following a suspected overdose.

“It was reported that the male had disclosed to hospital staff that he may have access to firearms and was making threats against police officers.

“An investigation has been launched to determine whether any criminal offences have been committed and officers are currently searching an address in the Marlborough Street North area of South Shields in connection with their enquiries.

“A 44-year-old man has been arrested and remains in police custody at this time. There is no wider threat to the public, and anyone with concerns is encouraged to speak to an officer on duty.”
