Man arrested in police raid after alleged assault in South Shields - loud bangs heard as police use 'distraction device' as they storm property

Northumbria Police were called to reports that a man had been assaulted in Wenlock Road, in the Simonside area of South Shields, at around 6.25pm on Saturday, July 25.
The victim was taken to hospital with minor injuries which police say were ‘consistent with a bladed article’.

Hide AdAn investigation was launched and a search began to locate a named man believed to be responsible for the alleged assault – who was traced to a nearby address.
A video circulating on social media shows parts of Wenlock Road cordoned off by police as officers raided a property.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “The 51-year-old was located at a nearby address and subsequently arrested. He remains in police custody at this time.
"This is being treated as an isolated incident between two men who are known to each other and there was not believed to be any wider threat to the public.”

Hide AdOne video taken at the scene shows police entering the property before a number of loud bangs can be heard.
Northumbria Police confirmed no firearm was discharged during the arrest.
“We are aware of a video circulated on social media during which loud bangs can be heard. This was a distraction device used by specialist officers to help detain the suspect. No firearm was discharged during the arrest of the suspect,” the spokesman added.
