Man helped to safety after clifftop alert

A man was helped into the care of the police after concern was raised after he was spotted on the clifftops during high winds and snow storms.

Northumbria Police was joined by the South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade, Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team, the North East Ambulance Service and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service following the alert just before 11.30am today at Frenchman's Bay in South Shields.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 11.23am today we received a report of concern for the welfare of a man in the Frenchman’s Bay area.

While cold, the man did not need any medical treatment and was left in the care of police officers.

Anyone reporting an incident on the coast is asked to dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
