Emergency crews called after gang of 30 youngsters seen tombstoning off cliffs
Emergency crews were called after gang of 30 youngsters met up to do tombstoning in South Shields.
South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade (SSVLB) were called to Frenchman’s Bay in the town at 7.09pm tonight, Tuesday, May 26, following reports of around 30 young people were tombstoning.
Members of the group were seen jumping off the high cliffs into the water below.
The life brigade spoke to the group and gave them safety advice before police arrived and the group left the scene.

The incident comes as the coronavirus lockdown continues, which prevents people from meeting up in large groups outside of their household in a bid to prevent the spread of the virus.
A South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade spokesman said: “The team were tasked to Frenchman’s Bay after a report of approximately 30 youths tombstoning.
“Team members arrived and spoke to the youths giving safety advice.
“As police were making their way over the leas to speak to them they left the area.
“Remember for all coastal emergencies dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
