Happy 100th Birthday Captain Tom! Gazette readers call for NHS fundraiser to be knighted in lovely birthday messages

And Gazette readers have come out in force to wish the centenarian a very special day with some taking the opportunity to call for the captain to be knighted.

On his 100th birthday, Thursday, April 30, Captain Tom has been made an honorary colonel.

The ‘true gentleman’ won the hearts of the nation when he embarked on a fundraiser – with an initial target of £1,000 – to support the NHS by walking 100 laps of his garden.

Now he’s raised over £31million for the NHS and is currently at number one of the UK’s music charts for his duet to ‘You’ll never walk alone’ with Michael Ball.

He is the first 100-year-old to ever have a number 1 hit.
