Tributes have been paid to retired football commentator and presenter George Taylor after his death at the age of 94.

George Taylor will be remembered by Sunderland, Newcastle United, Hartlepool United and Middlesbrough fans alike as the presenter of Tyne Tees Television regional football programme Shoot! in the 1970s and 1980s.

His career continued in the early 1990s when he joined Newcastle United as player liaison officer.

A statement from the Magpies on December 14 read: “Newcastle United are saddened to report the passing of former player liaison officer George Taylor.

“George, who served the club for more than 20 years following a hugely successful career in the media, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning aged 94.

“A sports reporter for newspapers including the Daily Mirror in his early career, George moved to Tyne Tees Television as sports editor in the 1960s and he would become a familiar face in living rooms across the North East as a commentator and host of programmes including Shoot! and Sportstime.

“George joined the Magpies as a member of staff under Kevin Keegan in the early 1990s, helping to support the club's players off the field.

An ITV Tyne Tees spokesperson added: "Everyone at ITV Tyne Tees was very saddened to hear of the death of George Taylor.

"He was one of the first presenters on air with Tyne Tees and was a groundbreaking television journalist, introducing not just the iconic Shoot! and Sportstime programmes to our screens but also putting darts and snooker on television. His contribution to television and sport was immense.

"Our thoughts are with George's family and friends at this sad time".
