'Exciting' new micropub and brewery to open in former Cleadon florists

Earlier in 2020 South Tyneside Council received a planning application to change the use of a former flower shop in Front Street, Cleadon, reviving the business space as a micropub and microbrewery.

A design and access statement from the applicant sets out the vision for the business.

It reads: “We are a local family with a love for brewing craft ales and beers ready to take our passion to the next level.

“Having brewed quality craft ales at home for many years we now feel that this is the right time to open a micropub/brewery to share these creations with the local community.

“We are also looking to offer craft ales, stouts, beers and gins from local microbreweries and distilleries as well as the unique opportunity to sell crafted ales and beers which have been brewed on site in our microbrewery, this has never been done locally before and we feel it would be a great asset to the village and surrounding areas.

“All beverages not brewed on-site will be sourced from small local companies which will give a welcomed, and much needed, boost to our local economy in these difficult times.”

The document adds the micropub would be dog-friendly, aimed at over 30s and would promote responsible drinking, with no ‘happy hour’ or ‘buy-one-get-one-free’ promotions.

In addition, no amplified music would be played in the premises and the self-contained and sealed microbrewery equipment would not release any fumes or smells.

Applicants aim to attract a range of potential customers from returning locals, dog walkers and visitors of nearby shops to people visiting Cleadon Hills or using local walking routes.

They also hope that the site would provide an economic boost to other businesses in Cleadon Village.

The planning statement goes on to say: “Having spoken to numerous residents and nearby friends they all agree that the village is ready for an exciting, new and unique business that will compliment the area and bring the community even closer together during what has been an awful time of uncertainty.

“It’s our passion, and we truly believe it will breathe much needed life back into the village.”

South Tyneside Council’s planning authority approved the plans on Thursday October 22.

Approved opening hours for the micro pub will be 12noon-11pm, Monday to Saturday and 12noon-10pm on Sundays.
