The Met Office has issued its first snow and ice warning for the North East this winter.

Following the weather service’s forecast for the potential of snow earlier this week, the Met Office has now issued an official warning for wintry conditions.

Issued just before 10am on Friday, November 15, the warning covers much of the North East including parts of South Tyneside, Gateshead, Newcastle and beyond.

The warning is currently in place from 10am on Monday, November 18 until 10am th following day.

The full impacted region covers much of northern England and southern Scotland, as far south as Leeds and as far north as Edinburgh and Glasgow.

As part of the warning, the Met Office is warning the public about delays to public transport, as well as the potential for longer journeys by car.

There is also a “small chance” small rural communities may get cut off by potential snowfall as well as a chance untreated pavements across the region may become dangerous.

The warning is not covering areas directly on the coast, but parts of South Tyneside such as Hebburn are within the impacted region.

The Met Office forecast for the comign days sees temperatures take a major dip from the weekend heading into next week. Highs of 9°C and 7°C are expected on Saturday and Sunday respectively, while showers on Monday may turn wintry.

Predictions suggest these showers will continue into Tuesday, November 19 which will combine with freezing temperatures overnight and daytime highs of just 5°C to 6°C to create potentially icy conditions.

Heading into the latter part of next week, the Met Office’s long term forecast says: “Cold or very cold conditions are likely to affect most if not all parts of the UK early in this period, with wintry showers affecting in particular northern parts and exposed coastal districts.

“Overnight frost will likely be widespread and occasionally strong winds will result in significant wind chill.

“However, there may be more organised areas of rain and snow, accompanied by strong winds, which run across some parts.”
