We’re bringing a twist on a Gothic horror classic to a South Shields theatre

A twist on a classic Gothic horror story is coming to a South Shields theatre.

The Westovian Theatre Society is bringing a classic horror story with a twist to South Shields as they prepare for their latest production.

Audiences are invited to witness Morgan Lloyd Malcolm’s 2025 adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, which sets women at the heart of the tale.

It sees Mina Harker tell her own version of Dracula’s infamous journey from Transylvania and will run at the Pier Pavilion from November 4, until November 7.

Fresh from directing ‘Home I’m Darling’, his first show at the Westovians, Mike Harrison has shared what it was like to take on a completely different challenge.

He said: “The technical elements of the play have presented many challenges to a small amateur theatre such as ours, but it has been great to work out how to stage the show, with its many special effects and hundreds of lighting cues.

“It has been a joy to work out how to maintain the suspense and mystery throughout the piece, and how to surprise and unnerve the audience without necessarily needing to lean on gory horror.

“The fantastic cast and crew have worked incredibly hard to bring this tale to life in the manner Morgan Lloyd Malcolm intended, and I can’t wait for audiences to see what we have created.”
