We're starting South Shields' first yoga and wellness festival

Two local wellness instructors are bringing a one day celebration of yoga to South Shields.

Two wellness instructors are bringing South Shields’ first ever wellness festival to the town this month.

Experts Michaela Stewart and Liv Whiting will host the South Shields Yoga Festival alongside seven other instructors from across the North East to offer a series of sessions and stalls to anyone wanting to try the activity, no matter their previous experience.

It is hoped the event will bring together members of the community who may otherwise not meet.

“We really wanted it to be a celebration of our town” said Michaela, one of the organisers.

She added: “I hate when people say it’s gloomy or all the shops are closing. There’s always plenty of negative views and negative things happening.

“We wanted to bring wellness teachers together. A lot of us work solo so we want it to be more of a collaboration with wellness practitioners across the North East.”

The event, which will include a holistic market with local vendors, will take place at the Sutton Hall on Prince Edward Road, on Sunday, June 14. Sessions will take place between 12 noon and 8pm.

Michaela and Liv work together running classes in Charlotte Terrace Business Centre in the heart of South Shields, with Michaela going full-time in 2018 after starting ten years ago. She started by renting Liv’s space before they combined to run the studio.

Sessions as part of the event will include various types of yoga with energetic, dynamic styles mixing with more gentle styles for first timers. Meditation sessions and laughing yoga will also take place.

“Don’t worry if you haven’t tried yoga before” adds Michaela, who was born and raised in South Shields. “It’s like a good opportunity as a little taster. Maybe not yoga, but trying meditation for people who may be a bit stressed or having a hard time. It’s a nice opportunity to take some for yourself and do something a little more holistic.

Anyone wanting to sign up for the festival can contact the event team through the event’s Facebook page. Places remain available with seven sessions available throughout the day as part of the festival.
