Hebburn Town ready for 'two cup finals' as title hopes boosted by Cleethorpes Town win

Hebburn Town boosted their Northern Premier League title hopes with a win at Cleethorpes Town on Saturday.

Daniel Moore hailed an ‘unbelievable effort’ from Hebburn Town as they preserved their place at the top of the Northern Premier League Premier Division table with a gritty win at Cleethorpes Town.

Top goalscorer Gary Martin gave the Hornets a perfect start as they took the lead with just 12 minutes on the clock before defender Matty Elsdon doubled the advantage before half-time. The two-goal advantage remained in place until the midway point of the second-half when the Owls hit back to get back on level-terms with two goals from James Blunden and Josh Walker that appeared to have delivered a blow to Hebburn’s title hopes.

However, Moore’s men summoned up all of the spirit and desire that has allowed them to surpass all expectations this season as they claimed a big win thanks to a goal from captain Aidan Heywood and a late clincher from Martin.

He said: “It’s a brilliant win because this is a tough place to come and they’re one of the form teams in the league. Conditions played a massive part in the game because it’s blowing from one end to the other and I think both teams were dropping it in the opposition box from one end to the other. The character we have shown today, hats off to the players, it’s an unbelievable effort.

“I can’t say enough about them. To go away from home, at two-two, the desire to go and try and win things and try and finish as high as you can, they just stepped on the gas in the last 15 or 20 minutes and we were brilliant. We have two cup finals plus at least another one. We said five games ago can we build momentum towards the end of the season. If we are going into the end of the season in good form, it takes us into the play-offs in reasonable form.”

The Hornets will now focus their attention on another away day as they prepare to visit Bamber Bridge next Saturday afternoon in the penultimate game of what has already been an incredible season.
