Newcastle United are aiming to add to their squad during the January transfer window as they look to strengthen Eddie Howe’s squad and build on the unquestionable momentum built up over the last month.
As it stands, the Magpies are in the race for a Champions League place, hold a two-goal lead after the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final against Arsenal and get their FA Cup run underway with a home tie against League Two club Bromley on Sunday afternoon.
With their battle against the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations still ongoing, there is little room for error in the transfer market - and the current Magpies hierarchy will hope to avoid repeating some of the costly mistakes made by the club throughout the last 25 years.
With the midway point of the January transfer window rapidly approaching, we take a look at some Magpies signings that have failed to hit the heights during their time at St James Park.

13. Yoshinori Muto
A £9.5m signing during the summer of 2018, the Japan international never really settled at Newcastle and scored just two goals in 28 appearances in all competitions before joining Vissel Kobe on a free transfer in August 2021. | Getty Images

14. Sol Campbell
This felt like a shrewd addition at the time as the England international and former Premier League winner joined the Magpies on a free transfer ahead of their return to the top flight in 2010. However, Campbell struggled throughout his time at St James Park and left after just one season. Photo: Bryn Lennon/Getty Images

15. Matz Sels
You could forgive Newcastle fans for having a wry smile when Sels was described as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League this season during Sky Sports coverage of Nottingham Forest's recent win at Wolves. He has been - but that is a contrast to the performances he put in during a two-year stay at St James Park earlier in his career. | Getty Images
