Newcastle United are aiming to add to their squad during the January transfer window as they look to strengthen Eddie Howe’s squad and build on the unquestionable momentum built up over the last month.
As it stands, the Magpies are in the race for a Champions League place, hold a two-goal lead after the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final against Arsenal and get their FA Cup run underway with a home tie against League Two club Bromley on Sunday afternoon.
With their battle against the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations still ongoing, there is little room for error in the transfer market - and the current Magpies hierarchy will hope to avoid repeating some of the costly mistakes made by the club throughout the last 25 years.
With the midway point of the January transfer window rapidly approaching, we take a look at some Magpies signings that have failed to hit the heights during their time at St James Park.

9. Florian Thauvin
Another French winger that failed to hit the heights at St James Park. Thauvin was a £14m signing from Marseille in August 2015 scored just one goal in 16 appearances as he struggled to adapt to the Premier League. 10. Haris Vuckic
There was a lot of talk about the Slovenian youngster when he joined Newcastle from NK Domzale in January 2009. There were rare flashes of his undoubted ability but he made only 19 appearances for the Magpies and spent loan spells with Cardiff City, Wigan Athletic, Rotherham United, Rangers and Bradford City before departing Newcastle on a free transfer in 2017. | Getty Images

11. Henri Saivet
Football Manager icon Henri Saivet was limited to a measly five appearances during an uneventful stay at Newcastle. His one goal was a well taken free kick against West Ham, but other than that fans saw very little of him before his departure in 2021. | Getty Images

12. Jamal Lewis
There was much excitement when Newcastle signed a highly promising Lewis during the summer of 2020. Inconsistency and injuries have hampered his time at St James Park and the Northern Ireland international is now likely to leave the club on a free transfer when his contract comes to a close at the end of the season. | Getty Images
