Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, Tino Livramento: Newcastle United injury list & return dates

Newcastle United injuries: The latest on Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes, Tino Livramento and co heading into a busy run of games for Eddie Howe’s side.

In a week which saw Newcastle United welcome back Dan Burn and William Osula from extended injury absences, the side lost two key players due to injury.

Burn and Osula returned to training last week and were included in the matchday squad for Newcastle’s 2-0 defeat against Aston Villa at St James’ Park on Sunday, though neither got on the pitch.

Burn had been out for six weeks with broken ribs and a punctured lung while Osula had been sidelined for 12 weeks with an ankle injury.

It was a welcome boost for Newcastle, who had been short of defensive options in particular. Head coach Eddie Howe even dropped the divisive suggestion that the pair would be ‘like new signings’ for Newcastle this month, given the quiet nature of the transfer window.

But Newcastle still have several players out of action and have lost two big ones in each of their last two matches.

Bruno Guimaraes was forced off with an ankle injury in the 3-0 win over PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League last Wednesday night and missed the Villa game as a result.

Early in the second half against Villa, Guimaraes’ compatriot Joelinton saw his 250th appearance for the club cut short due to a groin problem.

Following the Villa match, here is Newcastle United’s latest injury list and expected return dates...

Bruno Guimaraes - ankle

Guimaraes very rarely misses matches for Newcastle so when he does, his absence is felt.

Fortunately, Newcastle are hopeful the Brazilian’s issue is not a serious one and he hasn’t been ruled out for Wednesday’s trip to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

Expected return date: PSG (A) - 28/01

Joelinton - groin

Joelinton was enjoying a good run of form for Newcastle before suffering his latest injury blow.

Following the Villa match, Howe said: “He felt his groin. We don't know how serious that is, but it was a big blow to lose him when we did.”

Joelinton has had previous issues with his groin, missing four months of the 2023/24 campaign due to a groin injury.

Newcastle will be hoping this issue is far less serious as they await a further assessment of Joelinton’s latest injury.

Expected return date: TBC

Jacob Murphy - hamstring

Jacob Murphy has missed Newcastle’s last four games with a hamstring injury after initially trying to play through the issue.

Although scan results have shown no serious problem, the club have opted to give the player a period of rest to recover and get back to full fitness.

Howe said: “Jacob has had another [hamstring] scan, and again, nothing is showing, which is a strange one. You have to go on the symptoms and how the player feels. That'll probably mean a period that Jacob has to come out.

“How long, I don't know, but we're thankful it's not a serious problem and hopefully one we can overcome quickly.”

Expected return date: Brentford (H) - 07/02

Emil Krafth - knee

Emil Krafth has been out since November with a knee problem. Despite travelling to Marseille and training ahead of the Champions League match at Stade Velodrome in November, Krafth wasn’t named in the squad and hasn’t been seen since.

In his latest update on the defender, Howe said: “He is trying to come back from a knee problem. He is not feeling absolutely at his best currently. I have got no definitive return day for him. We are taking it day from day, and we will see him back quickly.”

Expected return date: Brentford (H) - 07/02

Tino Livramento - hamstring

Tino Livramento has been out of action since suffering a hamstring injury against AFC Bournemouth in the FA Cup earlier this month.

The defender is set to have an extended spell on the sidelines of around eight weeks, which would rule him out until March.

Expected return date: Chelsea (A) - 14/03

Fabian Schar - ankle

Fabian Schar suffered a serious ankle injury that required surgery following Newcastle’s 4-3 win over Leeds United earlier this month.

The defender has had surgery on his ankle but is now facing a period of around three months out in total, ruling him out until the back end of the season.

Expected return date: Crystal Palace (A) - 11/04

Jamaal Lascelles - fitness

Jamaal Lascelles hasn’t started a competitive game for Newcastle since March 2024 and may have already played his last game for the club having not been included in a matchday squad since the defeat at Brentford in November.

Howe admitted there was a possibility the defender could leave the club this month as he heads into the final months of his contract. The situation won’t become clearer until the window shuts or Lascelles secures an exit.

Expected return date: TBC
