Eddie Howe has spoke the penalty miss for which Bruno Guimaraes apologised after Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup win over Crystal Palace.

Howe’s side won 3-2 on penalties last night after the two sides drew 0-0 in normal time. Guimaraes put his spot kick over the bar after a taking an unconventional run-up, but Nick Pope made three saves to book the club a place in the fourth round of the competition.

Guimaraes, outstanding in midfield so far this season, apologised on Twitter after the game, and Howe pledged to “pick up” the 24-year-old ahead of Sunday’s Premier League home game against Chelsea

"He cares so much," said United's head coach. “He wants to do the best for the team. Everyone can miss a penalty, nobody’s immune to that. He's missed tonight, but we’ll pick him up – and he'll be fine. I thought he did very well when he came onto the pitch."

Newcastle are third in the league after last weekend’s win over Southampton.
